Gumroad Mech Tutorial - Final

Final render of the mech tutorial by Tim Bergholz which can be found on his Gumroad page.(https://gumroad.com/timb).

The tutorial shows almost every step in creating this mech, from 3D modeling to rendering. Tools used are Autodesk 3ds Max (Modeling, UVing), Substance Painter (Texturing) and Marmoset Toolbag 3 (Rendering). Great tutorial for getting to know these software packages, which was my main goal when I decided to buy it. Therefore I did not stray too far away from what was being shown in the tutorial.

Learn² Narrative Concept Art - Week 5

Some work for week 5 of the Narrative Concept Art course. Will revisit it later as some stuff came up while working on these. The point of these exercises was to copy the layers using blending modes and come up with ideas this way.

Learn² Narrative Concept Art - Week 4

Back with week 4 of the Learn Squared, Narrative Concept Art course. This week was all about trying out new methods for putting down ideas. 4 different methods had to be done each day, for every assignment I took 30 minutes.

Line vs Shape:
Creating shapes using flat opaque brushes and then using the Find Lines and Cutout filters to come up with linedrawings.

Transparency vs Opaque
Using soft edged brushes in conjunction with hard edges brushes to get a 'Focal Point'.

Flat vs Texture

Using textured brushes to come up with 'happy accidents' and create more of an indication of form.

Mixer vs Smudge

Using the mixer brush and the smudge tool to create shapes and form.

3ds Max Mech Course

Skipping a week on the Narrative Concept Art schedule to brush up on my knowledge of 3ds Max. To do so I decided to buy this tutorial https://gumroad.com/l/mech_tutorial by Tim Bergholz, and so far it's been really helping to get me more comfortable with Max  (which is a rather annoying endeavor if you're used to Maya like myself)

Decided not to make use of the Maya controls in Max as they are very badly integrated and make some of Max's features unusable.

Learn² Narrative Concept Art - Week 3

This week consisted out of 2 types of assignments, 'master studies' and iterations on the daily thumbnails made during week 2. The master studies were about analyzing movie shots, taking not of what camera lense and position were used as well as where the lighting came from. Furthermore the contrast and repetition within the image also had to be analyzed.

Won't be posting every single image as they aren't very creative, but below is a shot-breakdown from the movie Ivan's Childhood (Ivanovo detstvo) from 1962. Aside from this movie I also analyzed Citizen Kane (1941) and Seven Samurai (Shichinin no samurai) from 1954.

And here are the iterations on the previously created thumbnails. The shot had to be the same, however the subject of it needed to be different with each iteration. Showing that the subject, while important, isn't as big of a deal compared to the shapes that make up the composition.

Virtual Plein Air #01

Could have spend several more hours, if not days on this. However I felt that I arrived at a point of mindless rendering and decided to move on to something else.

Mapcrunch (google maps) was used to come up with the reference image.

Learn² Narrative Concept Art - Week 2

Week 2 of the Learn Squared: Narrative Concept Art course! I tried to stick to 30 minutes per page, doing 2 pages a day. The goal was to keep everything as abstract as possible in the start and go from there, which worked very well for the most part. Though some thumbnails are clearly less inspired than others. I will probably do more of these on a daily basis, however as they aren't as visually spectacular they probably won't end up on this blog unless they were used as a base for a more finalized piece.

Learn² Narrative Concept Art - Week 1

Decided to revive my blog by keeping track of my progress during the Narrative Concept Art course over at Learn Squared. The goal of the first week was to experiment with photoshop brushes and layer styles, more specifically the bevel and emboss settings. The homework consisted out of doing daily paintings lasting around 50 minutes per day + a more finished weekly painting based off of one of the dailies.
